Along the Potomac River is an area best known for the Piscataway Native American tribe that settled there in 1200 AD. Captain John Smith was the first European to see the Accokeek area, and in 1608 he sailed the Potomac River and found the Moyaone village.

This heavily wooded neighborhood was given National Register of Historic Places status in 2020.

Moyaone Reserve is a community of mostly mid-century modern and contemporary homes that have been designed by modern architects including Charles F. Wagner, Charles M. Goodman and Peter Danko

A distinctive feature of the reserve is a five-acre minimum lot size that’s protected by scenic easements deeded to the National Park Service.

Within this reserve, Moyaone Modern is an organization dedicated to the preservation, education and promotion of its mid-century modern architecture. Today there are approximately 20 homes in Moyaone registered in Maryland as mid-century modern. A tour is scheduled for this April.

Currently on the market, listed by Sheryl Romeo Real Estate, is a contemporary built by Peter Danko at 6850 Steamboat Landing Road.

Noted local designer, Danko is also an inventor and artist, whose work has been curated by and is in the permanent collection of several museums including Museum of Modern Art, Cooper Hewitt Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

The house is earth-sheltered, designed with passive solar energy features, including glass on two sides with wall to ceiling views framed with mahogany, bathing the house in natural light.

A seamless addition was added in 2006 that includes an attached two car garage, additional bedroom and an exercise/family room with a private sauna. Features include 10 foot ceilings on the first floor and custom finishes.
