Inspirational Contemporary Renovation For a Rescued Mid-Century Modern Treasure

This Mid-Century Modern gem was originally designed in 1953 by renowned modernist architect Donald Lethbridge. Lethbridge, who studied under architect Walter Gropius, was one of the trio of partners of Keyes, Lethbridge & Condon, an important modernist architectural firm throughout the 1950s-70s in the Washington region. The firm is responsible for famed modernist developments in the area, such as Potomac Overlook and Carderock Springs, and was known as an incubator for young architects, including Warren J. Cox and Hugh Newell Jacobsen.

The architecture is a pinnacle example of mid-century modernism adored by Washingtonians. Built of concrete, brick, and steel, with amazing spans of linear glass, this robust home has deceptive and generous proportions. Over 5,000 Square Feet of flowing, open spaces spill seamlessly onto outdoor patios through the walls of glass. The elevated site is more than half an acre in size and offers an incredibly unique pitch with unexpected seasonal skyline views into Washington DC, the National Cathedral, and the Rosslyn Skyline. It's no wonder this property was selected for such a restoration.

It is hard to believe this classic example of Mid-Century Modern design was once on the brink of demolition. The current owner, John Abraham, a respected architect in his own right and founder of A2 Design Inc., purchased the threatened home and proceeded to embark on a most thoughtful contemporary renovation.

With total sympathy for the original design and materials, the home has been lovingly restored and updated into a truly breathtaking contemporary home. The updated Mid-Century Modern home now features an automated home system with central air conditioning, an authentic wood-burning stove, and a Chef's kitchen, complete with custom fabricated, one-piece stainless steel countertops. Residing on the lower level is a home gym and media room, though the space could easily be converted for other functions.

Outdoor amenities include a hot tub, barbecue area, and outdoor dining, while the extensive terraces are made complete with beautifully landscaped grounds that seem to offer a taste of Los Angeles within DC.

The property is just one of 10 homes on its block in an ideally located cul-de-sac. North Arlington is considered one of the most desirable suburbs of Washington D.C. Just across the Potomac River, Arlington is home to many parks and hiking trails, as well as many new and exciting restaurants.

This is an incredibly rare combination of Mid-Century Modern charm and contemporary amenities within a dynamic neighborhood that offers an efficient commute to The Nation's Capital.
